2013 First National Bank Pittsburgh Triathlon & Adventure RACE This Weekend
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – (July 22, 2013)
Friends of the Riverfront is proud to announce the 16th Annual First National Bank Pittsburgh Triathlon & Adventure Race, which returns to Pittsburgh’s North Shore Saturday, July 27th and Sunday, July 28th. Over 1,500 triathletes, from beginners to professionals, will come together to challenge the grueling Pittsburgh Triathlon course.
“This is an important event that draws a lot of attention to our region’s riverfront and Three Rivers Heritage Trail,” said Thomas Baxter, Executive Director of Friends of the Riverfront, the organization that created the Triathlon in 1998. “Proceeds go towards supporting Friends of the Riverfront's mission including continued trail development and stewardship efforts. We appreciate First National Bank’s support and their ongoing commitment to the community.”
“First National Bank is proud to be the title sponsor for this year’s Pittsburgh Triathlon,” said Robert Moorehead, Pittsburgh Region President of First National Bank of Pennsylvania. “The Triathlon attracts world class athletes and creates a valuable opportunity for local residents and businesses.”
Athletes can register for the race online at www.pittsburghtriathlon.com, but space is limited. “Registration is almost full and will close soon,” said Race Director Neil Semmel of Piranha Sports. “This is a nationally recognized and sanctioned event. We want to make sure that all athletes and spectators have a top notch experience.”
In addition, the weekend’s activities will include the family-friendly and free Race Expo on Friday, July 26th from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm and continues throughout the weekend from 10:00 am to noon on Saturday, July 27th and from 10:00 am to noon on Sunday, July 28th. Athletes, friends and families are welcome to check out the latest triathlon gear from sponsoring vendors and enjoy live musical performances by the New Orleans Riverside Band (http://rayryanriverside.homestead.com/) on Saturday and Sunday. All vendors will have information, a complimentary product, or interactive activities to enjoy. The Triathlon Expo will be near the main tent for packet pick-up on the North Shore’s Great Lawn. About Friends of the Riverfront
For over twenty years, Friends of the Riverfront has been devoted to expanding and developing the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, an urban rail-trail paralleling the riverbanks for 25 miles along the riverfronts of Allegheny County. The mission of the Friends of the Riverfront is to increase awareness and engagement with the Pittsburgh region’s rivers and riverfronts through activities, stewardship, and expansion of land and water trails. About The Pittsburgh Triathlon
All races will take place at the North Shore Riverfront Park/Great Lawn along the Allegheny River between PNC Park and Heinz Field. Participants and spectators will appreciate the exciting backdrops of the beautiful city over the three major rivers in the area. Both the Triathlon and the Adventure Race have a bike and run portion, while only the Triathlon has a swim to start in the Allegheny River. In place of a swim, the Adventure Race has a paddle in either a kayak or a canoe.
