Promoting green work spaces and business practices is an integral part of FNB’s culture. We understand that the growth and development of businesses has a major environmental impact on our communities. That’s why our environmentally responsible actions are visible from the planning and construction of new offices to the ongoing maintenance and management of existing branch facilities. Whether it is the construction of new office buildings, retrofitting energy efficiency into our existing facilities or using product and service technologies to promote sustainability, many of our efforts are focused on reducing the impact on climate, by us or our clients. The efficient operation of each FNB building begins with our ongoing focus on branch optimization. Since 2016, our concerted efforts to streamline and optimize our branch structures has resulted in reductions in energy consumption, water consumption and carbon emissions, in addition to a significant impact in conserving resources and recycling waste. Our investment in energy-efficient facilities includes the construction of our regional hubs, which are designed to facilitate cross-functional collaboration and provide opportunities to accommodate future growth. Many of these buildings, including the newest regional hubs in Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina, not only consolidate the operations of outdated, less efficient buildings and regional operations, but also are designed to seamlessly integrate office, residential and retail space within a U.S. Green Building Council LEED Platinum certified building (a globally recognized standard for the design and operation of high-performance green buildings and neighborhoods). Notably, environmental considerations are part of our newest concept branches, which include smaller footprints and significantly greater reliance on technology and electronic delivery of documents that reduce our carbon footprint. ENVIR ONMENTA L Sustainabil it y Existing FNB office facilities are continually evaluated for ways to be more energy-efficient. FNB assesses upgrades to more efficient water systems, LED lighting and new HVAC systems, where appropriate, with the objectives of meeting the highest Environmental Protection Agency guidelines and centrally monitoring and managing energy efficiency and usage. Inside each of FNB’s buildings, our employees are strongly encouraged to utilize environmentally sustainable practices in everyday processes and actions. This includes our initiative that resulted in the reduction of over 7 million pieces of paper since 2014 (approximately 840 tons), with an anticipated elimination of an additional 1.4 million pieces (approximately 168 tons) throughout the remainder of 2019. Our efficiency initiatives extend to the paperless way that customers do business with us in our branches. Each branch features a one-of-a-kind, easy- to-use digital Solutions Center and all branch managers are equipped with iPads, which allow us to replace paper brochures with transparent, interactive product and financial education content. We actively encourage customers to use mobile devices and computers for paperless communication with FNB. Customers are able to apply for, open and fund checking, savings and certificate of deposit accounts fully online, without printing and mailing paper forms. Customers also may deposit checks using their mobile devices. In 2018, First National Bank’s app was recognized by S&P Global Market Intelligence as one of the region’s top mobile apps for features and innovation. Our environmentally responsible focus doesn’t end with our physical branches and resource efficiency. It extends to our clients and throughout our communities with our financing of renewable energy projects. Most recently, FNB financed a landfill gas-to-energy project, a large operator of a solar generating system, an industrial facility that will convert poultry litter to heat and power a significant biomass facility, also fueled by poultry litter, which generates renewable electricity. Collectively, our environmental strategies and practices reinforce our core operating principles, which include the understanding that FNB is part of a larger community dedicated to exploring sustainable strategies to protect our environment and our climate. In 2018, FNB provided construction financing for a landfill gas-to-energy project on the site of a 1,000-acre landfill in Greensboro, NC. The electricity produced by the project will be sold to the regional energy provider under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement.
